What’s going on in Star 19

Well, it sure is nice to have a long weekend after such a busy week!

On Monday we had SciWorld visit with their stardome. We were given a demonstration of how the earth and moon orbit the sun, which really helped to correct some misunderstandings about how night and day happen. After crawling into the stardome we sat in darkness and did some star gazing. We saw some of the constellations and were told some of the different stories about them. Some of the biggest stars were pointed out to us and finding out that one of the stars might go super nova in our lifetime generated a lot of questions. I think the presenter did quite a good job of settling any concerns the children had.

We once again got stuck into our 60 second challenge for Design and Technology. There have been lots of great conversations about speed, height, the properties of materials and how they all impact the success of each project. The resilience everyone shows though each lesson leaves me stunned. The determination of the groups is incredible, and I can see improvements in how teams are collaborating with respect, an open mind and patience.

In maths we have been looking at units of time. Everyone had a choice of an investigation: Create a resource to teach others about the relationship between units of time; What’s one thing you can do for a second, how many times should you be able to do it in a minute? How can you prove it?; Why might some people say there are 4 weeks in a month? How can you prove if it’s true?

Have a look at this amazing resource created by Kit and Ella!

Some groups have been timing themselves jumping, blinking and saying “me” in order to prove how many times it can be done in one minute (our classroom must look like a pretty strange place sometimes). Other groups have been looking at calendars and making calculations of days and weeks in months. The rest of the presentations will be done this week. I’m looking forward to seeing the outcomes of their investigations!

On Wednesdays we have our HASS lessons, where we work collaboratively with Simone and rooms 17 and 18. We have been focusing on celebrations and commemorations on the personal, local and global levels. After creating a timeline of personal events and doing some research about a celebration from another culture, we are bringing it back to CLG and focusing on what it is that we as a community value. Stay tuned for where this may take us…

We have had some visits from two students from UniSA who are in their first year of their education degree. This week they will be in our class for the whole day on Wednesday and Friday. We are very lucky to have them helping and learning with us and the children are certainly enjoying it!

Just a little reminder that tomorrow is a pupil free day. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again on Wednesday! Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
